Eugene Lambert author talk

By Mrs C Anderson16th November 2017

Eugene Lambert author talk

30 Year 7 students visited English Martyrs on Wednesday 15th November to listen
to a talk by the author Eugene Lambert as part of the Literary Leicester
festival that the university organise.

Lambert talked of his trilogy of books, specifically the first in the series ‘The Sign of One’ and how he turned his initial idea into a series of novels. The students learnt how to develop a small idea into a larger one, adding detail as you go. Lambert discussed how to make your creative writing believable – even when it takes place in a make-believe world – through interactive story building activities.

The morning ended with a question and answer session with Lambert
where our students contributed thoughtfully and politely.

Once again, it was a delight to take our students out and ‘show-off’
how fantastic they are both in attitude and behaviour.

SAM JACQUES wins RFU try of the month!

By Mrs C Anderson15th November 2017

SAM JACQUES (Year 9) wins RFU try of the month!

A sensational individual try from Year 9 Brookvale Groby Learning Campus student Sam Jacques was named Try of the Month for October in a game he played for Hinckley under 14s centre.

To view the video of the try please click on the attached link:
http://www.englandrugby.com/news/hinckley-rfc-solo-effort-named-try-the-month-1326993/#

The try was chosen by England winger Anthony Watson, who selected Jacques’ effort over the other October nominees.

“It’s an individually brilliant try and one that I would definitely be proud of myself,” said Watson of Jacques try in which he beat five players while sprinting the length of the pitch.

“I just remember catching the ball and then seeing a bit of space,” said Jacques, who joined Hinckley this season having first picked up a rugby ball aged nine.

Jacques was playing at inside centre for the match and had his dad Scott watching from the sidelines.

“I think my speed is the best bit of my game so I just tried to break through and managed to get past a few of their players.”

Jacques says it would be his dream to follow in Watson’s footsteps and become a professional player but first and foremost he just wants to carry on playing the sport he loves.

“All my best mates are in my team and I just love playing rugby so I don’t really keep count of tries I’ve scored, I just try and enjoy it.”

National Research Project Award

By Mrs C Anderson15th November 2017

Campus award from the SSAT;
The Schools, Students and Teachers Network.

Brookvale Groby Learning Campus over the last two years has been involved in a national research project.
We were one of only 60 schools chosen out of hundreds to take part.

Over the two year period teachers met on a monthly basis to share ideas on how student learning can be improved through different forms of feedback. Teachers said that they saw students becoming more involved in their learning and ready to participate in class rather than relying on others. They also felt that students were more reflective and engaged with their feedback leading to greater confidence in learning.

The above photograph shows Mandy Bearne who coordinated the project handing the certificate from the SSAT to Katie Rush and Robert Coles.

Highest ever GCSE results

By Mrs C Anderson24th August 2017

Brookvale Groby’s highest ever GCSE results

I would like to give my warmest congratulations to our GCSE students who have received Brookvale Groby’s best ever results today.

Against a backdrop of unprecedented change and much tougher exams in English and Maths our students have done extremely well. I would like to thank parents/carers and staff for their support and hard work during this turbulent time.

It is hard to draw comparisons between the year groups due to the changes in grading for English and Maths from A*-G to the new 9-1 system. This cohort however have achieved results which are higher than any previous year group. Nearly three quarters of our Year 11 students achieved at least 5 GCSEs at grade C (or 4) or above including English and Maths.

Please click here to see some of our brilliant students celebrating their success.

We are extremely proud of all our students but a few of our highest performers are listed below:

  • Student with the most progress – Rhea Uppal
  • Top performing female student – Ella Munn
  • Top performing male student – Nayan Mistry

The top 11 students (based on average point scores) are:

  • Ella Munn
  • Olivia Riley
  • Nayan Mistry
  • Raveen Sagoo
  • Henry Woodall
  • Imogen Wilson
  • Charlotte Lane
  • Rhea Uppal
  • Finley Armitage
  • Fay Harvey
  • Sarah Burnham

Thank you to parents and carers for their unwavering support during the busy revision and exam period.  Your family support is absolutely central to the students doing so well; these are your grades too!

My thanks and appreciation goes out to our staff who make it possible for the students to achieve these grades from the moment they start on campus in Year 7.

For any students who are staying to continue their studies at Post 16 please remember that the details for signing on have been sent out to you prior to the summer holiday. If you are unsure about what you are doing please contact the Post 16 team. Staff will be on campus from Tuesday 29 August and Post 16 sign on day is Wednesday 30 August. Year 12 studies will commence on Monday 4 September at 8.40am.

A Level Results

By Mrs C Anderson17th August 2017

Outstanding A Level Students – Class of 2017

A Level students at the Brookvale Groby Learning Campus have celebrated some outstanding results this morning. During Year 12 and 13, students have studied a mixture of the brand new, much more rigorous, A Levels and Level 3 BTECs. The outcomes from this advanced level of study reflect an extraordinary effort and hard work during the last two years.

More than a quarter of all A Level and Level 3 BTECs have secured the highest A* and A grades with nearly half of all grades awarded A*- B.

I am thrilled that grades have remained stable from last year and that the students have risen to the challenge of the new courses.

There were some exceptional individual outcomes in this year’s set of results as well as many students who have made excellent progress over the last two years since taking their GCSEs.

Click here to see some more of our students receiving their results this morning.

A huge congratulation goes out to our students and we wish them well in the next chapter of their lives. Many of them are off to University with some going straight into employment and further training.

I would like to thank the parents for their endless support throughout their child’s education. Thank you to our hard working and dedicated team of staff who make the achievements of our young people possible during a period of such dramatic change.

Well done and good luck to our Year 13 students from the Class of 2017.

EWAN PANTLING

By realsmart admin7th June 2017

Over Easter Ewan Pantling; Year 9 student competed in the World Hunter Field Target championships at Kelmarsh Hall in

Northamptonshire in which he came 2nd in the world in the junior class. Over 360 competitors took place in the event organised by the

World Hunter Field Target Association.

Hunter field target competitions are simulated “hunting” using target air rifles to shoot metal targets (rather than live ones) which are

silhouettes of small animals such as rats and squirrels and birds like crows and pigeons (all classed as pests). The 30 targets are set over a

course in woodland at various distances and heights with different size “kill zones” within the shape to make them as difficult as possible,

taking into account the trajectory of the ammunition and wind strength and direction.

The competition took place over two days, shooting 30 targets each day, on two different courses. At the end of the two days Ewan and

another junior competitor were tied for 2nd place which meant that they had to take part in a shoot off. This involved shooting 3 targets

at different ranges in front of the other competitors. After winning the shoot off Ewan won the 2nd class trophy in the under 17s category.

Ewan has been competing in HFT competitions for just over a year and has already accumulated a nice collection of medals and

trophies. He is competing in the UK national series this year as well as other events.

The photo above is of Ewan receiving his trophy.
