BGLC are Hinckley and Bosworth Schools Cross Country WINNERS!

By Mrs C Anderson17th December 2019

BGLC have retained the Hinckley and Bosworth Schools Cross Country title after winning the inaugural competition last year.  It is awarded to the school with the most students running in each of the Leicestershire Schools Cross Country League races.  We share the trophy with Market Bosworth High School this year.  Well done to all our students that have represented the campus in cross-country this year, particularly as the conditions have been very challenging.

Pictured below, with the winning trophy, are some of the students
who took part and represented BGLC.

The Year 7 boys team were crowned Leicestershire School Cross-Country Champions for their age group. Louie Paddison, Riley Smith and Evan Wrightam ran in all the races, but they were joined by Macauley McGlinchey, Archie Darker and Harry Thurlow in the earlier races.  An excellent result for the boys in their first season running for the Brookvale Groby Campus. The Junior Boys team finished third in their respective league with Philip Chick, Joe Matthews, George McMorran and Arthur Wrightam our regular runners at this age group. Another excellent result!

The picture of the three boys above left is of
George McMorran, Arthur Wrightam and Joe Matthews from the Junior Boys team.

The above right picture is of
Evan Wrightam and Louie Paddison from the Year 7 team.

The picture below was kindly sent to the school Twitter account by Riley Smith’s mum.
It shows Evan Wrightam and Riley Smith at the end of a very muddy race!

Medhedz

By Mrs C Anderson19th November 2019
On Monday 18th November, Year 12 student Yuvraaj Dhugga invited 2 medical graduates currently studying at the University of Leicester, to talk about how to get into medical school.  Joe Cheema a graduate of Biomedical Science, who after a couple of attempts has got onto medicine and is now in his 4th year of study and Milkha Basra, who is also in his 4th year of study but is taking a year out of his medicine degree to study a Masters in Medical Research.

Joe and Milkha told us how you have to be determined to get into medical school as it may not happen on the first, second or third attempt. They explained that medical schools are looking for extracurricular activities as part of your application and these do not necessarily have to be healthcare based. Both Joe and Milkha are rugby players.  Joe spent a year as a volunteer in a care home handing out tea and speaking to residents. For his medicine interview he was able to draw on his experiences and what he had learnt.

We found out that being smart about who you apply to for your four UCAS options can improve your chances of success. Milka suggested everyone looks at https://www.medschools.ac.uk/media/2357/msc-entry-requirements-for-uk-medical-schools.pdf  and apply to the universities which play to their strengths; whether it is you interview well or you are good at practical activities. They suggested that you keep up to date with current affairs as you are likely to be asked how a current story impacts your work. Lastly think about the question, ‘Why doctor and not a nurse?’

Remember you can only apply for 4 university places for medicine but you can add a 5 choice from Allied HealthCare. Rachel from Allied Healthcare Professionals will be in on Tuesday 26th November in the Brookvale Conference Room at lunchtime to deliver a presentation. All welcome.

By Mrs C Anderson18th November 2019

For National Roast Dinner Day on Wednesday 13th November, BGLC arranged for a group of local senior citizens to come and have their lunch with some of our students. Students and guests chatted over a lovely roast chicken dinner followed by apple crumble and custard!

This is something we as a campus would love to continue to do, on a regular basis.
