Lizzie Warner’s archery achievements in 2017!

By Mrs C Anderson8th February 2018

The last 12 months have probably been the best yet in Year 13 student Lizzie Warner’s archery career.  She came into 2017 on the back of a double victory in the UK Indoor Championships, winning both the junior and senior national titles.  Her good form continued throughout the remainder of the indoor season and on into the outdoors, where she gained considerable success in both junior and senior tournaments.  She won the series of selection shoots for the GB junior team (Under 21s) by some margin and then went on to finish 1st in the Under 18s at the national outdoor championships, her 5th age group title in successive years. She’s been remarkably consistent in national championships; the last time she failed to finish in the top three, indoor or outdoor, was in 2010.

Lizzie was also remarkably successful shooting in senior competitions. She competed in 4 of the 6 stages of the National Series, the major event on the domestic calendar, finishing 3rd in the first stage and 2nd in stages 2 and 6; she ranked 3rd for the Grand Final which was held in Birmingham City Centre. As a result of her performances in the early part of the season she was invited to the senior selection shoot, where she finished 4th narrowly missing out on a place in the senior team for the World Championships in Mexico. At 17 years old that would have been a considerable achievement. She finished the summer season in 1st place in the junior national rankings and 5th in the senior.

Back indoors, at the National Indoor Championships in December she claimed the bronze medal, following up her 1st place last year, and also finished 3rd in the prestigious Back-to-Back tournament, an invitation only event for the country’s top archers.

Lizzie’s first international call up came in 2013 when she was selected for the England Junior team. She went on to make her debut for GB in 2015, the same year in which she won a silver medal with England at the Commonwealth Youth Games. This year she gained selection for the GB Junior team (under 21s) on three occasions: the European Indoor Championships, where she won a team bronze medal; the Europa Cup in Croatia and the Youth World Championships in Argentina. She also made her debut for the England senior team, one of two women selected, in the Home Nations indoor international.

Lizzie has received innumerable awards in her career; most recently, she was runner-up in the Young Sportswoman category at the Mercury Sports Awards (she won it last year) and is the current Blaby Sportsperson of the Year.

Lizzie meets with her GB coach once a week at the National Sports Centre at Lilleshall in Shropshire. She usually trains 6 days a week for up to 30 hours, working on her technique as well as strength and conditioning exercises and improving her overall fitness.  She’s cut back considerably on her training this winter however, as she studies for her A levels at Brookvale Groby Learning Campus, and has taken part in very few tournaments.  She’s a member of the National Squad however, and has hopes of making it into the GB Junior team again in the summer and the senior team in the near future. The Olympic Games in 2020 is her ultimate target.

WELL DONE LIZZIE!

3M Young Innovators Challenge

By Mrs C Anderson5th February 2018

A team from Brookvale Groby is taking part in the annual 3M Young Innovators Challenge.  The team of Year 9 & 10 girls, are competing in the Science Detectives challenge this year.  Team picture below of Zoë Cartledge, Poppy Maynard-Smith, Amelie Golesworthy, Amber King and Jess Penlington who also competed last year in the Tower Tech version of the challenge.

This challenge involves using forensic science techniques and investigations to solve a chilling Icelandic mystery; Arctic Research Station Scientist Frank has been found dead and the team are given a number of suspects to investigate.

They must use evidence found at the crime scene, social media evidence and laboratory techniques in order to solve the mystery.

Last week’s part of the challenge was purely about gathering that evidence with the coming weeks devoted to solving the mystery.  There was also chance to perform some exciting laboratory experiments at 3M’s labs in Loughborough, such as infra-red spectroscopy, gas chromatography and titration.

Was it an overdose of medication, dodgy shark cubes or spiked drink? Or was there something more sinister at play and was Frank murdered?

The students must solve the mystery and present a crime report, lab report and present their findings to judges in April.

We’ll have the results of their competition (and indeed the details about what happened to poor Frank) in a future article!

All the girls are enthusiastic about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and hold ambitions to potentially enter the sector in the future.

Zoë said: “I really enjoyed the experience.  CSI is one of my favourite shows and this was great.”

Poppy said: “It was great chance to learn something new and to have a new experience outside of my regular school day.”

Amber said: “It was great to use a technique (titration) that I’d just studied in my chemistry lessons in a real world laboratory.”

Mr Grimley said: “STEM experience is such a great opportunity for our pupils, especially our girls.  Just 9% of engineers in this country are female so there are fantastic prospects for our young people who are interested in STEM.  Activities such as this provide a great “real world” application of techniques they learn in their science or Maths lessons.”

National Foreign Language Spelling Bee Competition

By Mrs C Anderson1st February 2018

Stage 2 of the National Foreign Language Spelling Bee is now complete! The competitors had a list of 100 words to learn and they had to try spell as many words as possible using the French alphabet in just one minute. Fourteen pupils took part – and they all did brilliantly! All of their hard work has paid off and they should be very proud of their achievement.

Sadly, we can only take three competitors through to the next Stage
– a huge congratulations to Jagruti Lohit, Niamh Sanders and Owen Thompson, pictured below, who will now go through to the Regional competition at Stamford College in April.

Year 8 Boys’ Football Team progress to the County and National Cups!

By Mrs C Anderson1st February 2018

Our Year 8 Boys’ Football Team continue to excel this year, progressing in both the County and National Cups respectively.

A Huge 10-0 win against Charnwood College means the team have earned the right to defend their County Cup in the finals on Tuesday 6th February at Harborough Town FC.

Perhaps even more impressively the team have now moved into the Semi-Finals of the Schools’ National Cup and can already be considered in the top four teams of their age group across the country. Victories over The Long Eaton School, Ashfield, Ecclesfield and most recently, St Mary’s College of Hull in the Quarter Finals in an enthralling tie. The team demonstrated huge levels of togetherness and quality to secure a 4-2 win after extra-time and now look forwards to the draw for the semi-finals.

A massive congratulations to all students that have been involved so far this year and keep up the good work!

U14 Boys’ Rugby Team Winners!

By Mrs C Anderson31st January 2018

The Year 9 Boys’ Rugby Team have qualified for the final of the Leicestershire County Plate after a 62-14 win away at John Fearnley. Michael Reynolds opened the scoring with an unconverted try, but John Fearnley hit back to take a 7-5 lead with a converted try. This stung the Brookvale Groby team into action and we proceeded to score 57 unanswered points through tries from Tom Allen (3), Sam Jacques (3), another for Michael Reynolds and one apiece for Harry Laundon and Zak Golding. Tom Allen completed the scoring with 6 conversions. John Fearnley scored a late consolation. A fantastic all-round team performance. We look forward to taking on De Lisle Catholic School or Brockington College in the final.  U14 team photo below:

‘Top of the Bench’ Chemistry Competition

By Mrs C Anderson24th January 2018

Well done to the team of students from Brookvale Groby Learning Campus who won the Leicestershire heat on Wednesday 13th December!  ‘Top of the Bench’ is a national competition run by the Royal Society of Chemistry.  Teams of 4 are invited to take part but must consist of 2 Year 9 students, 1 Year 10 student and 1 Year 11 student.  12 schools took part in the local heat.

After winning the Leicestershire heat our team progressed to the regional final which was on Saturday 20th January 2018 at Derby University.  This round consisted of another written task and also a practical challenge which took around 1 hour.  Both were completed as part of a team again.  40 teams took part in the elimination rounds to the regional final of which Brookvale Groby Learning Campus came 10th!

The students involved Oliver Swann (Year 9), Ava Morton (Year 9) Charu Patel (Year 10) and Tim Cowling (Year 11) pictured above, said that they enjoyed taking part in the competition.  I want to thank the students for representing the campus in their own time and also to their parents for their support.  Also thank you to Miss Hawke for going to the regional final on Saturday.

Miss Scott, Teacher of Science.
