Katie M Parker competed in the English Schools Cross Country Final

By Mrs C Anderson19th March 2019

Year 10 student Katie M Parker competed in the English Schools Cross Country Final on Saturday 16th March at Temple Newsam in Leeds.

Katie had qualified to represent Leicestershire and Rutland by running for Brookvale Groby in the league and County Cross Country final races.

Katie came 20th overall out of a 341 girls in the U15 race, a great race to end the cross country season.

Katie is a very determined and dedicated athlete, this race has only inspired her more when she found out her place was only 20 seconds off qualification to run for England!

Well done Katie!

Primary Science Morning – 11th March 2019

By Mrs C Anderson11th March 2019

On 11th March, Brookvale Groby Science department welcomed 36 very enthusiastic and able Year 5 & 6 pupils, from 9 local Primary Schools, to embark on a morning of Science discovery, exploring our labs and attempting to extract crystals from a mysterious solution.

The sessions were very well received and pupils excelled themselves in asking and answering in depth scientific questions, showcasing their talents for all things Science! They were required to use a Bunsen burner safely, utilise potentially dangerous scientific equipment and solve various problems in order to enjoy filtration and evaporation experiments to see who could think like real scientists and produce the largest crystals.

The session also involved exploring flame tests (looking at how different metal based solutions burned) and watching a demonstration of ‘elephant’s toothpaste’!  Click on the links below to view the videos:

Elephant’s Toothpaste video                        Flame Test video

The primary pupils’ conduct was exemplary throughout and we found it very difficult to select a top performing few to receive ‘top performing scientist’ certificates.  A top well done to all involved.

Assistant Faculty Leader for Science and Key Stage 3 Science Lead

U16 GIRLS FOOTBALL SEMI-FINAL

By Mrs C Anderson28th February 2019

The U16 Girls Football have been knocked out of the ESFA National Cup competition at the semi-final stage. It has been a fantastic achievement to get this far, matching the achievements of last years U13 boys football team.

The game ended 2-1 to Horizon Community College in Barnsley after a hard fought encounter. We took the lead through a neat Katie Parker finished, but conceded an equaliser almost immediately. Horizon took the lead early in the second half, but despite an extended period of attacking pressure we couldn’t quite find the second goal. Every single student who has represented the team has been a credit to the college, giving everything in each round, but it just wasn’t to be. Our attention now shifts to defending the Team Leicestershire County Cup that we won last year.

WELL DONE TO ALL THE GIRLS – FANTASTIC EFFORT!

BEOWULF

By Mrs C Anderson25th February 2019

As part of our English topic ‘Beowulf’, Mrs Stewart assigned us a task of recreating the tale of ‘Beowulf’ in a different form.

In a creative approach, the class made a variety of imaginative ways to tell the tale, ranging from: storyboards, posters, modules, diagrams and raps.

National Foreign Language Spelling Bee Competition

By Mrs C Anderson14th February 2019

Stage 2 of the National Foreign Language Spelling Bee is now complete! The competitors had a list of 100 words to learn and they had to try spell as many words as possible using the French alphabet in just one minute. Sixteen pupils took part – and they all did brilliantly! All of their hard work has paid off and they should be very proud of their achievement.

Sadly, we can only take three competitors through to the next Stage – a huge congratulations to the Isabelle Parker, Kerina Sidhu and Katie Lane who will now go through to the Regional competition at Stamford College at the end of March.

BGLC Cross Country Team crowned Hinckley and Bosworth Cross Country Champions!

By Mrs C Anderson14th February 2019

Congratulations to our Cross Country running team, who have been crowned the inaugural
Hinckley and Bosworth Cross Country Champions.

This trophy is designed to encourage more pupils to engage in cross country running at the Leicestershire Schools Cross Country League races. Our runners have been victorious by virtue of getting more students running in each age category than the other secondary schools in our local area. Although we have had some fantastic individual performances, it’s great to be recognised for getting students taking part in physical activity.

This photo below shows only a small section of the runners who have participated this year.

WELL DONE TO ALL OUR RUNNERS!
