The Big Ask

20th April 2021Mrs C Anderson
HAVE YOUR SAY!

The Big Ask is a survey for children and young people aged 4–17 in England. The survey is split into different age groups, so you can fill in a version appropriate for your age. They have also made easy-read ‘accessible’ versions as well as a version for care leavers.

Why you should take part
This is your chance to have your say on the things that matter to you. You can say what your life is like, what you want in the future, and anything you think is holding you back.

They will use what you say to tell the people who run the country or your local area what you think needs to change to make your life better.

Not all heroes wear capes so they say and we will all know someone on our campus who does so much for our community but perhaps doesn’t get the recognition they deserve.
This half term the person nominated is MRS ALDERSON, Assistant Business Manager, who won a £20 Amazon voucher, a BGLC engraved award and a certificate.
WELL DONE!

Year 8 Sienna Chavda is a fully qualified Sea Cadet!

10th March 2021Mrs C Anderson

Flying High!

Two years ago, after watching an older cousin have an amazing time at Army Cadets, Sienna Chavda in Year 8 decided to take the plunge and join the Sea Cadets.  Many hours of boating, kayaking and camping later, Sienna has earned multiple badges, and quickly moved through the junior ranks to become a fully qualified Sea Cadet.

Each year a select group of Sea Cadets are chosen to take their Naval Airman’s Proficiency test after receiving instruction from professional pilots. Last year Sienna was delighted to hear that she would be able to prepare for this course and just before Christmas she passed it with flying colours!!  This success means that she has qualified for more advanced naval aviation studies, where she’ll continue to learn about aircraft designed to operate at sea, and the planes that take off from and land on the decks of Royal Navy battleships.

Achieving this level of success at lightning speed takes real dedication and Sienna usually attends Sea Cadets two evenings a week at their base in Ross Walk near the Space Centre.  Right now, of course, all the activities are virtual.   But Sienna’s drive and determination are certainly not going to be stopped by a global pandemic and she already has her eye on a Duke of Edinburgh Award – something that the Sea Cadets support.

While we might expect her to be commanding an aircraft carrier in the not too distance future, Sienna is not yet certain about her choice of career.  A medic with the Marines is one possibility.  Careers involving biology, psychology, criminology are also all in the mix.  However, Sienna is certain of one thing – the skills she is learning at Sea Cadets are not just fun and exciting, they will make her more confident and more successful – whatever path she chooses.

Congratulations Sienna!

If you are interested in finding out more about the Sea Cadets, the following link will take you to the Leicester site: https://www.sea-cadets.org/leicester

British Science Week 5 – 14 March 2021

8th March 2021Mrs C Anderson
As we welcome our students back into Science Labs, we are planning to thank them for their hard work during lockdown (and the months before) by performing really fun Science demos at the front of the lab, just to remind them why science is awesome.
We expect squeals of delight and open- mouthed gawping whilst we explode something!

It’s been really tough for the students as they have slogged away studying science for nearly a year now having really had little to no opportunities to undertake practical work in the lab. For many students (often boys and weaker students I have observed), being able to conduct practical work/ investigations is one of the reasons they love science, so this has been tough. We hope they enjoy it.
